Baftas 2024: Best British film nominees you need to watch | Binge Watch

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The Baftas 2024 have taken place, with the biggest film stars in the world in attendance at a ceremony that honoured the best movies and actors of the last year.

Hollywood actors, including Emma Stone, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, were present at the ceremony, which took place at the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday (18 February).

The winners were named exactly one month after the nominated films, actors, directors and writers were revealed by former EE Rising Star nominees Naomi Ackie and Kingsley Ben-Adir during a live press conference.

This year’s Baftas, which aired on BBC One, were presented by actor David Tennant. This marked the Scottish actor’s first TV appearance since returning for a series of Doctor Who specials in 2023.

Films in contention at this year’s ceremony included Oppenheimer, which swept the board at both the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards earlier this month, as well as its rival blockbuster Barbie, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things, starring Stone.

He told the crowd: “Thank you for seeing something in me that I probably didn’t see in myself” and, addressing Noland, said: Thank for always pushing me and demanding excellence because that is what you deliver time and time again.”

He then said he was “in awe” of his “fellow nominees and my Oppenhomies”.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph gets emotional afyer winning Best Supporting Actress

The Holdovers Bafta winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph got so emotional on stage she even made her co-star Paul Giamatti misty eyed.

“Paul Giamatti, oh gosh, I cry every time I say your name,” she said. “You represent everything that is true and good about this craft. Your generosity, curiosity and rigour inspired me every day on that film. I’m proud to call you a friend and thank you for never wavering.”

Talking about her role in the film, Randolph said: “The Holdovers was a little movie that we made in Boston about three people that came together to form a little family... Mary is so much bigger than me. She showed us all what is possible when we look behind the differences.”

She added: “Telling her story is a responsibility that I cannot lightly and this award is a beautiful reminder of how her story has rippled through the world. Thank you so much.”

Robert Downey Jr delivers a rousing speech

After taking home Best Supporting Actor for Oppenheimer, Robert Downey Jr gave an entertaining anecdote about his career to date.

“When I was 15, I wanted to be Peter O’Toole. When I was 25, I worked for Richard Attenbourgh and Anthony Hopkins. When I was 35, I finally understood why Dickie thought Tony would be a better role model for me than Peter,” Downey Jr. said. “When I was 42, I did two films for Guy Ritchie and learned how to make big Hollywood movies with a civil British flare. I then played a guy named Tony in the MCU for about 12 years.”

“And then recently, that dude Chris Nolan suggested I attempt an understated approach as a last-ditch effort to perhaps resurrect my dwindling credibility. So I share this with my fellow nominees, this has been an exceptional year.”
