From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Friday morning will see heavy cloud and showers across the country, with heavy rain for eastern parts of the UK. A Met Office yellow weather warning has been issued in eastern Scotland.

The warning of rain is in place until 12pm Saturday, and covers Perth, Dundee and Aberdeen. The Met Office has said “flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible” and warns that transport could be disrupted, with journey times taking longer than usual.

The Met Office’s Alex Deakin warned that “rain really building up through the day could cause some problems.” He added there would be “maybe 100mm over the higher ground.”

There are also a number of flood warnings and alerts in force across England, Scotland and Wales. Those issued by the Environment Agency include alerts on the river Avon near Bristol and river Cam in Cambridge.

The rain will shift eastwards during Friday leaving behind grey skies and scattered showers. Some brief sunny spells could be seen in the south of England.

Temperatures are slightly more mild as the weekend approaches. with a range of 7C to 11C across the UK.

Mr Deakin said it will be “quite breezy” in southwest and northeast of England but “elsewhere the winds are light”.

The weekend will bring with it more cloud and the possibility of some sun in the south west. Sunday is set to see more rain bringing milder temperatures for the end of the weekend.
