From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The UK is set for a changeable spell of weather over the weekend, with heavy showers and warm temperatures predicted by forecasters.

Many areas of the country will see a wide variety of conditions over the next few days, from hot spells on Saturday to thundery showers by the beginning of next week.

Steven Keates, a forecaster at the Met Office, said: “With low pressure close by to the UK this weekend, we’re set for quite a changeable and at times rather unsettled spell of weather”.

Conditions on Saturday morning will be fairly grey, as a band of rain pushes north, bringing a few sharp showers to Scotland.

The afternoon will generally be brighter, though there is a chance of showers returning to northern England and northern Wales.

There will also be heavy showers, possibly with thunder, in south-west England.

Elsewhere, the weather will feel quite humid in London, with temperatures rising to a warm 25C or 26C.

After a mild night, warm continental air will come from the east and south-east, making Sunday feel like another warm day. The mercury could hit highs of 23C in London.

The worst of the rain will fall in western England, Wales and Northern Ireland throughout the day.

A similar pattern of weather will continue at the start of next week, with a mix of cloud, sunny spells and scattered showers.

Monday will be largely dry but there will be further rain for western Britain and Northern Ireland. On Tuesday, there will be more in the way of cloud, with northern and western parts of the UK expected to have heavy and thundery  showers.
