There will be no white Christmas for the UK this year but the weather will have “seasonal feel," according to the Met Office.

The country is set to wake up to frost and dry weather on the 25 December following a week of milder than average temperatures.

However, forecasters have issued yellow warnings for rain in southeast and southwest England on on 23 December and Christmas Eve.

Following a wet start to the week, conditions are expected to turn drier and cooller across much of the country.

"It's going to be dry for the vast majority of the UK, and it will be a cold and frosty start to the day, particularly for England and Wales," said Tom Morgan, a meteorologist at the Met Office.

"It's going to be a frosty Christmas rather than a white Christmas.

"Even though it's not going to be a white Christmas, people will still need their big coats and scarves and hats etcetera for any walks they may be going on over the Christmas period."

Mr Morgan said there may be a light covering of snow in eastern Scotland on Christmas Eve, though none is expected the following day.

After Christmas, conditions will take a more unsettled turn, with the Met Office predicting low pressure from the Atlantic bringing stormy weather, with strong northerly winds, heavy rains and possibly snow. The weather is predicted to be worse in northern England.
