If Ros Wynne-Jones is right then John Gummer as Secretary of State for the Environment is guilty of hypocrisy. Having his car "warmed up" for 15 minutes each morning probably discharges more pollutants than the whole of the rest of his journey.
A car should be driven gently as soon as possible after it has been started. This warms the engine and the catalytic converter quickly and minimises emissions. Apart from wasting fuel Mr Gummer's practice is also bad for the car, for which presumably you and I are paying.
