The United States, which is no more of a democracy than we are, will be electing a president this year. Only about half of Americans will bother to vote and less than a third will vote for the winner. That means that two-thirds at least will not care who their new head of state is or will be opposed to him; no woman has ever been head of state in America - in this country a woman has been head of state for 107 of the past 159 years.
The hereditary monarchy means everyone can feel a sense of allegiance to the Queen.
