Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Germany has ordered 10,000 new ventilators for its healthcare system. What is the NHS doing? It would be reassuring if we received more information about medical preparations, as is happening in other countries.

Given that herd immunity requires a 60 per cent infection rate and assuming a 1 per cent death rate, are we to assume that this is a “desirable” outcome?

Working from home

It is unlikely that there will be many “silver linings” from the coronavirus situation. But if the crisis continues for a few months, as most predict, industry will evolve to use Skype or similar techniques, and conclude that they are just as effective as flying executives thousands of miles to make decisions.

We will all realise that the business world can continue just as successfully by utilising modern methods of communication rather than flying around the world to hold face-to-face meetings.

On the understanding that large numbers of people crammed together in airless offices is likely to aid the spread of coronavirus, many companies are asking their employees to work from home.

As the spread of this disease is also pushing us towards a financial crisis, surely all stock markets should be closed, their employees sent home as well.

Mass gatherings

The government is expected to ban all gatherings of 500 people or more. The House of Commons consists of 650 MPs. You do the maths.

An unusual sight

On Friday I saw something not seen before: men of all ages queueing up to wash their hands in a very busy pub toilet.
