Letter: Why there is no such thing as a safe religion

IN HER analysis of the Waco affair ('Protect the children from the angels', 25 April) Lynn Barber suggests sending children to Sunday school to 'give them an early dose of safe, boring, conventional religion and hope that it works as a prophylactic against discovering angels in adult life'. Sadly, this safe, boring, conventional religion seems to play its own role in the various sectarian disputes going on around the world. Could we not begin to instil in our children the elements of reason and clear logical thought which would guard them against all unthinking faith, whether in conventional religion, cults, or in so-called occult concepts.
