Sir: Professor Jimack (letter, 16 March) may well lament "ignorance of what happens outside Oxbridge". Regrettably, however, it would appear he too is ignorant. In three years as a geography undergraduate at Cambridge, not once have I encountered "tutors giving an off the cuff response to essays read aloud". A brief discussion with fellow students suggests I am not alone.
