Sir: The most intriguing character in the royal soap is, I think, "Buckingham Palace": clearly an all-knowing and very powerful personage. When I take a stroll down the Mall, to which particular window, chimney, drainpipe or other orifice should I direct my gaze in awe and admiration? Even when the Independent uses some such phrase as "a spokeswoman for Buckingham Palace", the mystery remains.
