Sir: As a regular visitor to the Royal Opera House slips, I would like to congratulate David Lister for his informative feature on ROH funding.

However, I cannot agree that improving the backstage facilities is a 'luxury'. A few years ago an employee working backstage at the ROH died as a result of injury from out-of-date equipment. Improving the backstage facilities is a necessity.
