Letter: Untie our priests to boost the Church

Sir: Stephen Trott's article was depressing for the laypeople who wish to see the Church modernise. His defence of freehold tenure used the traditional argument of professionals whose privileged positions are under threat, namely that their clients would suffer from any change.

Of course clergy need protection against unfair treatment but the present archaic arrangements are contributing to the decline in church membership. Congregations faced with poorly performing but unsackable priests are voting with their feet.
