Sir: The Legal & General Insurance Company's costing of the value of the average housewife's work (' pounds 18,000 price tag on a housewife', 3 February), typically undervalues this role.

The necessary secretarial, supervisory and management skills needed for budgeting, scheduling, forward planning, decision making and counselling are ignored. Even women returning to the job market often overlook these valuable skills that they have acquired, and usually successfully practised, while being regarded as 'just a housewife'.
