Letter: The beeps sound for mystery callers
Sir: Perhaps you would allow me to correct some misconceptions about BT's Caller Display service, soon to go on trial in Scotland (Letters, 19, 20 December).
We would like to reassure customers that they can most certainly prevent the identity of their number being displayed to the called party. They simply need to dial 141 before making the call.
Caller Display will be available nationwide when the necessary technology is in place and when our consultation processes have been completed. Our initial research shows a great demand for this service, which we expect to be of value in reducing the incidence of malicious calls.
This benefit exists even when the caller chooses not to display his or her number; the customer receiving a call can simply not pick up the phone if the number is not displayed.
Yours faithfully,
