Letter: The arts need more than cash

Sir: Polly Toynbee is right to deplore the plight of the regional theatres, but she has killed off prematurely the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre at Guildford.

We grieve for the loss of our neighbouring theatres at Farnham and Leatherhead, but the Yvonne Arnaud is very much alive - thanks to increased grant aid from Guildford Borough Council and generous support from some local business men and women.

It has a particularly interesting programme of plays for the months ahead and advance bookings suggest that it will draw the audiences. It still has worrying financial problems but it (and theatre in general) has survived before when crises have arisen.
