Sir: I did not choose 'soiled nappies and 15 years' vacuuming' (Letters, 30 March) when I chose to care for my children full-time, it is just part of the dross that comes with an otherwise enjoyable job. I also do not see my current role as permanent. When my second child starts school, I might embark on a 'sparkling career' or perhaps choose some other path to take.
Whatever I do, I hope that I will be defined by my personality and interests and not just by my occupation and salary. There are many different roles in society and we cannot fit into all of them, all of the time. If we could start to value people for who they are and not just what they do then we might be able to achieve equality not just between the sexes but throughout society.
Yours faithfully,
CAROLINE NEWELL
