Sir: Peter Gillman's article (17 December) on Jane Thomas's tragic death in the Cairngorms concludes that she died taking 'the risks of a mountaineer: no more, no less'. In fact, Jane Thomas may have died because (as reported) she was not carrying a survival bag. This is a strong plastic bag weighing 8.5 oz that costs pounds 1.95 - an essential for all hill-walkers and mountaineers.
