Sir: N. E. Recordon's letter (3 August) suggests that the 2,000 listed names on the front page of Monday's Independent may be prepared to volunteer to take up arms in the defence of humanity and Sarajevo. As I am not a professional soldier, but a building society manager, my most likely contribution would be to shoot myself in the foot. Enough politicians have already done this. If public opinion can help pressurise the vacillating governments of the West into action, then the pen is truly mightier than the sword.
