Sir: Am I the only teacher whose glee on reading of John Patten's latest fiasco and his subsequent repentance ('Patten admits 'Nuttergate' libel', 24 June) was tempered by a fervent wish that his statement to the High Court had read:

Mr Patten accepted that his reforms were false and without any justification whatsoever. He deeply regretted making them and withdrew them unreservedly.

Yours faithfully,

J. P. WEST
