Letter: Spielberg and the Holocaust

Sir: Michael Graham gives every indication of having missed the point about Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List. The film is not 'about' the Holocaust. It is about one man's reaction to the terrible deeds being perpetrated by his own government. It is about his decision to act in the face of the complaisance and moral paralysis shown by most other men and women.

The parallel today is with Bosnia. There are undoubtedly individuals who have acted with the same sense of common humanity as Schindler during the recent atrocities in ex-Yugoslavia. And there are also newspapers, such as the Independent, which exercise their public responsibility in revealing and condemning those atrocities.

Yours faithfully,

PHILIP LEE
