Sir: If the Independent feels moved to eulogise a fictional character such as James Bond ('Would the real 007 please stand up?', 9 June) you might at least not have presumed that you speak for all your readership.

May I assure you that there are plenty of us who have never romanticised about being 007 or a Bond girl. 'The days when men were men and women were glad of it' - if they ever existed - are more likely to be missed only in your own fantasies.
