Letter: Sense of Swiss ban on transit lorries

Sir: Hooray for the Swiss ('No lorries in Swiss backyard', 22 February). How much of our government's road policy would get through if we, too, had direct democracy?

I want to smell the flowers in the summer, instead of car exhausts on the by-pass. I also want investment in the railways and some genuine thought about what sort of a world we want, instead of a drift towards endless poisonous roads.
