Sir: Now that the A-level results have appeared, we hear, yet again, that science subjects are less popular. I, for one, am not in the least surprised.

There is nothing to be said for a career in science unless, of course, you thrive on low wages, low status, long hours and job insecurity: contracts can be as short as only a few months. Encouraging students to take science subjects is to do them a considerable disservice.
