Sir: I fear that the kind deed performed by Mrs Spittle's son (Letters, 1 December), when he assisted a fatigued racing pigeon and returned it to its owner, may have had a very unhappy result. It is fairly common knowledge that pigeon fanciers do not welcome the return of an errant bird, as homing pigeons who do not "home" will win no prizes.
Such feathered wanderers normally have their necks wrung in order that they do not pass on their bad habits to other birds.
Yours faithfully,
Keith George
