SIMON CALDER, in an excellent piece about Guatemala ('On the Vac Track', 2 May) rightly draws attention to the relentless oppression of indigenous people (60 per cent of the population). We would like to correct him, however, on one point: Santiago Atitlan is no longer a 'sad village'. Since the massacre of December 1990 when the army shot 13 people dead - including children - and the entire town rose up to march in protest, the army has been withdrawn.
Such brave acts of resistance deserve acknowledgement from the international community.
