Letter: Pecking order over coins

Sir: I was surprised to learn that, even in a democracy, the Chancellor of the Exchequer alone can determine the patterns on our coinage. Perhaps his aversion to birds is due to the Liberal Democrat emblem, or the use of bird holograms on many credit cards?
