Sir: Julien Evans asks (letter, 1 February): "`If a political party were to say: `Vote for us and we'll massively increase petrol tax to safeguard the future for your children', how many votes do you think they would win?"
Mine, for certain. It was while cycling in 1987 along what I had once seen as a country highway in Turkey and was now an inferno of trucks and fumes, that I firmly decided: there is no hope for the world unless the price of petrol goes up at least fourfold.
