From Mr Edward Ebden Sir: I am sorry that Ms Ni Bhrolchain feels that paintings of naked women have no place in public places. If that were so, we would all be the poorer for it. The human body, if depicted in the right context in art, is a beautiful andspiritually uplifting thing; I am sure Sister Wendy would not object.

I attend an evening class once a week on international law. On one of the walls, there is a reproduction of a Auguste Renoir's painting of a female nude depicted in warm French sunlight. There has never once been a complaint and probably the picture has hardly been noticed by the majority of the students. Should the adult education college be advised to give her the axe?

Yours sincerely, EDWARD EBDEN Beckenham, Kent 8 February
