Letter: No name, no number mean not suburban

Sir: The lack of street name signs in most British towns and cities is not only annoying, but also contributes to street accidents. Drivers have to direct too much of their attention searching for street names and not enough to safe progress.

In Germany, the US and Canada, every street name is clearly and prominently displayed in a consistent manner. Here, if shown at all, it may be 30ft up on the wall of a building, or low down and round the corner so that it cannot be seen until you have passed the corner.

Perhaps the Independent could sponsor a competition for the design of a piece of street furniture to show street names that could be adopted by all local authorities. This might shame the Government into framing some simple legislation to enforce its use.

Yours faithfully,

DAVID MACBEAN
