Letter: New roads are only a small part of Europe's transport plans

YOUR article on the development of a trans-European road network ('Europe caves in to road lobby', 6 March) was biased and ill-informed.

It suggested that the transport and regional development policies of all Central and Western European governments were wrong, because they believed that some new roads should be built and some existing roads improved. It ignored the extensive rail, inland waterway, port and airport improvements that are an equal part of the European Commission's plans for trans-European networks. It ignored the fact that only 15 per cent of the Commission's budget for transport infrastructure is allocated to roads. The article demonstrated no understanding of the constitutional problems the Swiss lorry ban has on the application by Switzerland to join the European Union.
