From Dame Elizabeth Chesterton Sir: It is very disturbing to learn that proposals have been received by Lambeth Council from the board of the National Theatre - a grade II listed building - that involve the demolition of an element in the riverside elevation which will upset completely the basis of the whole architectural composition and at the same time remove the existing pedestrian link with Waterloo Bridge.
The National Theatre has justly won admiration and indeed affection from a very large public and does not deserve this high-handed treatment. It is therefore to be hoped most sincerely that the Lambeth Council will feel that its only course must be to support the many objectors and reject these proposals.
Yours sincerely, ELIZABETH CHESTERTON London, NW3
