Sir: With reference to Beatrix Campbell's article concerning the death of Toni Dales ('Home alone with a murderer', 16 June), the tragic circumstances and matters arising from this death were handled by the constituent MP, Mo Mowlem. Ms Campbell indicated that the death of Toni Dales had raised 'no lament' from me; but in fact I appeared on local radio and television and deplored the child's tragic death.

I am sorry that in these circumstances you felt it necessary to mention my name at all in the article.
