Letter: Mixed welcome, but tourists return

Sir: I support most of Simon Calder's views. Compared with many overseas destinations, Britain is over-priced and the welcome in London is often disgraceful. One problem is that many of us have little or no pride in our country and fail to understand the meaning of service.

As to the costs of flimsy maps, both the British Tourist Authority and the English Tourist Board have had their funding cut over the years. They have to charge for providing such information.

With regard to the rail strikes, the impact is significant on those provincial destinations served by the network. Already Oban has identified a 13 per cent drop in visitor arrivals because people simply cannot get there.
