Sir: With regard to the article 'Electric van promises slow reduction in city pollution' (29 June), Harrods has four electric vans, one dating from 1919 built in America by the Walker Company and three constructed to Harrods' own specifications between 1939 and 1941.
Each is capable of doing a day's work, but they are kept by the chairman, Mr M Al Fayed, mainly for display purposes with occasional appearances in 'period' films. Diesel-powered replicas carry out our daily deliveries. Harrods once had a fleet of 60 electric vans.
Yours faithfully,
MICHAEL COLE
