Sir: The National Health Service is being asked to justify pay awards by increased efficiency.

Four years ago, the Out-Patients Sister at The Royal Marsden talked to me from 6pm to 6.30pm after I had been gently told that I had cancer.

How can you cost the comfort and the hope that she gave me then?
