Sir: I was pleased to see your note about this year's International Festival of Ethnographic Film at Manchester University. There have been several such conferences every year since 1968 but these three from Manchester and from the Royal Anthropological Institute in 1992, 1990 and 1988 have been the most productive, the broadest and most in-depth analysis of contemporary visual documents about cultures throughout the world. The conferences have been a tremendous asset in developing standards in the visual representation of culture.

As one of the international visitors, I do hope that the resources will be found to maintain these conferences in the future.

Sincerely,

TIMOTHY ASCH
