Sir: May I add a gloss to Andreas Whittam Smith's article (4 June)? I am by conviction as well as statute a citizen of Europe. I am, by ties of sentiment and blood, a Scot. I am also, by accident of birth, a subject of HM Elizabeth II, head of a state called the United Kingdom. It seems, sadly, that the last of these is becoming less and less compatible with the other two.
