Sir: I think many of us with political and social views to the left of Joseph Chamberlain and Harold Macmillan would be heartened if London's County Hall - opposite, and complimentary to, Parliament - could be restored to its old function and used to recreate a capital city we can all once again be proud of ("At last, Londoners rule themselves", 12 May).
Whenever I see the building I feel both angry and despondent that it was taken away from Londoners for petty and mean reasons and left the city the only metropolitan area in the world without an overall government. What a wonderful boost to Londoners' morale if ways were found to use it once again for its proper purposes.
