Sir: So, we witness the final shameful betrayal of the Bosnian Muslims who were naive enough to think that the UN and Nato, those representatives of world and European order, actually intended to ensure their safety. Yes, let us by all means leave Yugoslavia and raise no more false hopes by our continued ineffectual presence.

Much of my life has been spent in Europe and I have the happiest of memories of Yugoslavia. In abandoning these unfortunate people, I am ashamed to call myself a European.
