I HOPE that Michael McMahon is able to substantiate his statement that the comprehensive school system "is falling apart". Looking at the evidence here in Cornwall, where I am a parent-governor of a community comprehensive school, the system is going from strength to strength. It does need more of the resources enjoyed by the independent sector. What it doesn't need is the injection of selection, competition and market forces which Mr McMahon advocates.
No, the comprehensive ideal is fit and well in Cornwall. My two children are, thank goodness, learning that they can succeed without exclusiveness and that co-operation helps along the way.
