Sir: To bring a patient's life to a dignified end with increasing doses of morphine on the pretext of alleviating pain is somehow acceptable, but to do so quickly and efficiently by other means amounts to murder. The hypocrisy underlying Dr Nigel Cox's trial is astounding, and the main casualty for the foreseeable future will be the suffering patient, who may now be denied morphine as well.

Yours faithfully,

NILESH PATEL
