Sir: Neil Cooper's letter today, suggesting the use of sheep-dip as a midge deterrent is an act of folly and must never be considered. Modern sheep-dips contain mainly organo-phosphate pesticides which are neurotoxic and are absorbed by the skin.
One patient used such a preparation on her pet lambs and sheepdogs. She was paralysed and subsequently died.
Sheep-dips may only be handled wearing the recommended protective clothing and even then are an acute hazard to health.
Yours sincerely,
