Sir: Ivor Crewe ('Scale of defeat sets Tory alarm bells ringing', 31 July) argues that the Christchurch result cannot be explained by recession because retired voters are largely unaffected by it. What this leaves out of the equation is that most pensioners have sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters who are affected. Most retired people care about their offspring as well as themselves.
