Sir: Who needs a state exhibition to celebrate the millennium? Most of us all be exhibiting and partying anyway.

Wouldn't the millennium be best celebrated if the proposed pounds 400m was used to combat poverty and homelessness in the country? Then we could all go into the next century knowing that both public and private money had been used to redress social inequalities.

This would give us an even bigger justification to celebrate.
