Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Sir: Saul Billingsley of the RAC deplores the actions of the Revolutionary Pedestrians' Front in throwing paint on cars (Letters, 16 June). Surely this action results from the sheer frustration of people who feel that the policies of car dependence espoused by the RAC and other supporters of the "roads programme" have made life much less pleasant for pedestrians, cyclists and users of public transport.

There may be over 20 million car owners, but will someone please tell the RAC that, as car owners, we are also pedestrians, cyclists and bus and train passengers. The car is a wonderful liberator for awkward journeys that can never be properly catered for by public transport, but it is extremely inefficient compared with buses and trains in moving large numbers of people in densely populated urban areas. It is also extremely unhealthy for short journeys more suited to walking and cycling, due to pollution and lack of exercise.

The rather silly actions of the Revolutionary Pedestrians' Front are almost insignificant compared with the destruction of Twyford Down by the grey-suited vandals of the Department of Transport who for so long have refused to consider anything other than road building to solve transport problems.

Yours sincerely,

GRAHAM NALTY
