Letter: Blair's blurred vision of Britain

Sir: It is encouraging to read in various reports of Tony Blair's successful leadership campaign that a vision of Britain is back on the political agenda. For too many years, the electorate has been limited to a choice between means rather than ends, and a sense of how we might like to see Britain in the next century has been missing.

As it stands, though, Mr Blair's vision seems to lack a clear commitment to the environment. It is one thing to highlight the need for more jobs, better education and an improved health service, but what price these worthy goals if we continue to ignore the air we breathe, the water we drink and the open spaces that are so essential to our well being? The word 'sustainability' seems yet to be on Mr Blair's lips.

Yours faithfully
