Sir: You report today (Home News, 2 June) that Tory MPs facing losses at Lloyd's may seek 'private donations from wealthy party supporters' either to save their families from distress or to forestall the by- election that would follow their bankruptcy.

As a commitment to open government, and to raise standards of political hygiene to those enjoyed in the US and EC, the Prime Minister should announce now that the identity of MPs accepting such loans or gifts - together with the sums and names of donors - will be published as a matter of course. It is a mark of the rottenness of the British system that such undisclosed transactions are legal, or contemplated by any supposedly respectable politician.

Your obedient servant,

RICHARD DAVENPORT-HINES

London, W14
