Letter: Angry and restrained voices in the campaign against racism
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Sir: We were part of a group of students from Kingsway college that attended last Saturday's demonstration against racist attacks in south- east London. The demonstration was well organised and much needed. It reflected the real anger of black and white youth to the massive rise in racist attacks and the activities of the British National Party, whose base is in Welling. Young people feel that they must take things into their own hands if they are to stop more racist murders occurring in London.
Your report (10 May) blamed 'Trotskyists' for the violence, but we believe the problem was caused by riot police wielding shields and batons, many mounted on horseback, who broke up our demonstration as it stopped outside the BNP headquarters.
Congratulations to the organisers of the march for one of the biggest demonstrations of black and white youth against racism for years.
Yours faithfully,
MARK NICHOLAS, AMANDA JOHNSON, THERESA MORRIS, ABBY KAIN, SASHA WILLIAMS
