Letter: Accountable accounts

Sir: Natwest, according to Professor George Solt's complaint (letter, 26 July), won't sell you foreign currency unless you tell it what the money is needed for. Northern Rock Building Society goes one better - or worse. When withdrawing your money from its Postal 30 Account you have to say what you want it for. One of the six boxes to be completed on its Notice Form is introduced: 'The reason for withdrawal is . . . .'
