Sir: The announcement of the sale of the 'Three Graces' (report, 29 September) brings to the fore the crucial question: who guards the nation's heritage? At this level it has to be the Government acting through Parliament.

The sculpture is undoubtedly part of Britain's cultural heritage: originally commissioned by a British patron for a specific British location. It is unique.
